In the late 70s, my sister's boyfriend made a memory box for mom. Its 36x36x4deep with a glass front. Mom had it full of odd little trinkets. While some of the items could be considered family treasures, they're mostly her memories.
I emptied the memory box and started separating the items. Deciding what to do with it all has been ... troublesome. I hate throwing heirlooms in the trash.
But then there are other kinds of heirlooms. There was a small chocolates box that had my grandmother's writing on it. It appears the box of chocolates were given out at a dance in 1926. I found that pretty interesting, but inside was .... a pile of hair!!
My mom had notes written about what things were in the memory box, brother's rattle, dad's high school medals, and then "lock of hair". I assumed it meant like when you cut a small lock of hair and put it in a baby book, but no, this was a very large handful, as if she had chopped off a ponytail.
I found it a bit disturbing. Because grandma had died when my mom was 3 years old. So how did my mother come across this handful of hair??? And was it that important for my mom to have somehow kept it for all these years? (85 yrs now!)
Just a little bit weird for me. I didn't keep it.
She did keep a pair of booties from each of us kids.
