Distractions

How often do we let ourselves get distracted from our goals?
from our dreams?
from our tasks at hand?

Distractions are a fact of life; there are so many things happening in our world, our lives, our families, that its hard not to be distracted from the things we want out of life.  How do we break the cycle?  How do we relearn to stay focused on our goals and our dreams?

I'm reading a book entitled "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami.  It's a really good book, written to make you think and wonder about the world we inhabit and many times take for granted.  It gives you a different perspective, a way of thinking, about what we perceive as reality and leaves you pondering how different things could be if only we understood those things beyond our own world.  Every time I read this book, I find different things that jump out at me.

"We're so caught up in our everyday lives that events of the past, like ancient stars that have burned out, are no longer in orbit around our minds.  There are just too may things we have to think about every day, too many new things we have to learn."

Just recently, its become very clear to me that I let certain things distract me from other things that should be done, need to be done, or something I ought to do in order to take care of myself.  It's not always easy saying "no" to those distractions, but I'm learning.  It's a process, and some days I fail.  But with every day, it gets easier.  Maybe one day I'll have the courage to expound on what those distractions are; or maybe they'll be forever my own secrets.  Some say that admission is the first step to recovery ... well maybe that's not the right analogy, but certainly recognizing and acknowledging that I've allowed it to happen is the first step.  Changing choices and patterns is the next phase.
