Might Have, Could Have

Might have been's and could have been's.  Two entirely different things and yet they could almost be the same. I've been thinking about those things lately.

What is the difference? I like to think could have beens are based on our own choices, and might have beens are a result if someone else's choices.

Things like my childhood might have been different if mom had made different choices, or faced up to her own childhood issues or traumas, whatever they were. And I could have had a different married life if I had chosen to stand up to mom.

When you start looking back, you start seeing the might have's and could have's. Every choice we make has consequences.

It's a bit odd and unsettling to look back at things, life events, through adult eyes and see things differently.

One of the things pondered today was how I dislike any kind of birthday recognition. I don't mind it being acknowledged, but parties, cakes, presents are not my thing. That feeling might have been different if mom had treated my birthday differently. My sister had parties every year, not me. And  birthdays might have been different if I had chosen to ignore the past and moved on. But I didn't.

Despite all the might have's and could have's in our lives, our choices can make a difference going forward. Acknowledge the past, and learn from the past. Just don't let it hold you back!
