If you're my age, you may remember Richard Simmons and his VHS tapes "Sweatin' to the Oldies" from the 1980s. If you don't, you missed out on a wonderful person!
He was inspiring! He decided to start his first exercise studio. And in an interview, he said "We're all waiting for support from others. Sometimes we don't get it. That's why God made me."
He had an infectious laugh, a great smile and an even better attitude. It was catchy! And he welcomed everyone, no matter their size.
He motivated people because he wanted them all to be better. He cared. And how many of us want that, need that?
In his signature sparkly tank top and short shorts, his high energy helped us all feel better about ourselves.
The Diane Sawyer special about his life (on Netflix) didn't emphasize the years he was building his brand, but on how such an upbeat person could become reclusive in his later years.
There was joy in the world wherever Richard went. After his death, his brother said he's now "sweatin' with the holies". What a picture that brings to mind!!
And yes, I owned Sweatin' to the Oldies, volumes 1-5. After working all day, I would put the kids to bed, and load in one of my tapes and just start sweatin' and smiling along with Richard! Ahh, the 1980s!
